Prep Time: 1 hour 25 minutes (Ready in 2 hours 25 minutes)

1 cup sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
3 cups flour*
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
*High altitude: increase amount to 3 cups plus 2 tablespoons flour

1) In large bowl, combine sugar, butter, milk, vanilla, and egg; blend well.

2) Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.  Add flour, baking powder, and salt; mix well.

3) Cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate at least one hour for easier handling.  (Dough may be frozen for up to one week.)

4) Heat oven to 400°F.  On lightly floured surface, roll out 1/3 of dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness.  Keep remaining dough refrigerated.  Cut with floured 2-inch cookie cutter.  Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

5) Bake at 400°F for 5-9 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.  Immediately remove from cookie sheet.  Allow cookies to cool for at least 15 minutes before decorating as desired.  Makes 6 dozen cookies.

1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon milk
Food coloring (assorted)

Blend powdered sugar, vanilla and milk until it reaches smooth, buttery consistency, adding extra milk or powdered sugar if needed. Add 1-2 drops of food coloring and mix well. Refrigerate until it is time to ice cookies.
